AC running but not cooling? Here's what's wrong

Few things are more maddening than an air conditioner that runs all day while the house sits at 82°. The good news: in Florida homes, this symptom almost always traces back to one of five causes — and two of them you can check yourself in the next ten minutes, for free.

Check these two things before calling anyone

1. The air filter

A clogged filter is the single most common cause of weak cooling, and Florida's year-round runtime clogs filters faster than the "every 90 days" printed on the box. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. Can't see light through it? That's your problem, or at least part of it. A new filter costs a few dollars and takes two minutes to swap.

2. The thermostat

It sounds obvious, but weak batteries, a schedule someone changed, or a switch bumped from COOL to FAN ON causes a surprising share of "broken AC" calls. FAN ON means the blower runs constantly — even when the system isn't actually cooling — which feels exactly like an AC that runs but doesn't cool.

The three causes that need a technician

3. Low refrigerant from a slow leak

Your AC doesn't "use up" refrigerant like a car uses gas — if it's low, it leaked. The telltale signs: air from the vents is cool-ish but not cold, the system runs constantly, and you may see ice on the copper lines outside. Topping off refrigerant without fixing the leak is a bandage; the honest fix is finding and sealing the leak, which typically runs $250–$1,200 depending on where it is.

4. A failing capacitor

The capacitor is the small part that gives your outdoor unit's motors the jolt they need to start. In Florida heat, capacitors are the #1 part failure we see. Classic symptom: the indoor fan blows, but the outdoor unit hums, clicks, or the fan won't spin. It's also one of the cheapest fixes — typically $150–$300, done in one visit.

5. A frozen evaporator coil

Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can cause the indoor coil to ice over into a solid block — and ice, counterintuitively, blocks cooling entirely.

If you see ice on the copper lines: turn the system off now. Running a frozen system can destroy the compressor — the difference between a $200 repair and a $2,000 one. Switch the thermostat to OFF (fan ON is fine to speed thawing) and let it thaw for a few hours before service.

What it'll cost to fix

Most "running but not cooling" calls end in one of the repairs above. For typical Sumter County price ranges on each, see our AC repair cost guide for Wildwood. And if your system is over 12 years old, it's worth running the numbers on our repair-or-replace calculator before approving a big repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my AC blowing air but it's not cold?

The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a failing capacitor keeping the outdoor unit from running, or a frozen evaporator coil. Check your air filter and thermostat settings first — those are free fixes. If the air still isn't cold, the system needs a technician with gauges.

Can I just add refrigerant myself?

No — refrigerant handling requires EPA certification, and modern refrigerants require matched equipment. More importantly, low refrigerant means there's a leak; adding more without repairing it just delays the same failure a few weeks at additional cost.

How long should I wait for a frozen AC to thaw?

Usually 2–4 hours with the system off and the fan set to ON. Never chip ice off the coil — the fins damage easily. If it freezes again after thawing, the underlying cause (airflow restriction or a refrigerant leak) needs professional repair.

Why does my AC run constantly in the Florida summer?

Some of that is normal — on 95° days a correctly sized system may run close to continuously during peak afternoon heat. The red flags are running constantly while the house stays warm, or new behavior your system didn't show last summer. Those point to a refrigerant, airflow, or capacity problem worth diagnosing.
